Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is heading for the limbo as the local chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) has declared what it calls a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike. A Congress decision to this effect was the main outcome earlier today on the campus of the university.
There are no hints immediately if a contagion effect is a likely outcome of this isolated action. The National body has been boiling and only stopped short of declaring a nationwide strike action because some senior citizens are intervening in its crease with the Federal Government.
A statement signed by Dr. Adeola Egbedokun, the branch chairperson of the union gave the university authorities red card in terms of the seriousness required to sort out the key issue: payment of Earned Allowance, (EAA). According to him, “all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglio has failed” and Congress resolved on the strike option.
The strike will not be called off without a Congress resolution to that effect and the payment of the EAA which is the condition for return to work must be based on the National body’s computation of it.
The academics at the campus are putting in place a Strike Coordinating Committee to monitor the progression of what the National body gave its blessing.
