Governors who rode to power on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) are saying they are standing shoulder to shoulder with President Buhari who is struggling to be re-elected for a Second term. Comrade Salihu Lukman, the Director-General of the Progressive Governors Forum said in a statement that any interpretation of the absence of the governors from the meeting of the APC Presidential Campaign Council Thursday this week as ditching the president is marketing of falsehood and mischief by opposition elements.
The governors, he said, endorsed all decisions and accepted all responsibilities arising from the meeting. According to him, there was nothing to it beyond the congestion of tasks for the governors’ as for them to have been at the Thursday meeting. After all, the governors were in Abuja earlier on Tuesday for the inauguration of that same council. “I therefore wish to emphatically state that all APC governors are firmly united in their resolve to work tenaciously with the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari”, said Lukman.
The statement is coming in the wake of interpretation that the governors’ collective absence at yesterday’s meeting could not but signal a high voltage rupture in the APC High Command. Of course, the speculation has not taken into consideration the question of who needs the other more as for the speculated ditching to make sense. There are those who would say the governors, individually and collectively, actually need the president more than the president needs them to win. That is to say that those suggesting that the absence of the governors means ditching the president might actually be no more than engaged in propaganda.
