As the sun rises on Friday, August 7th, 2026, it illuminates a truly monumental occasion, the 73rd birthday of one of Nigeria’s most distinguished legal minds and a revered pillar of the Idoma Nation: Chief John Agbaji Attah Ochoga, Akpa-olofu, Life Bencher. Akpa is the Idoma name of the tree epitomizing strength.
To know him is to witness a living testament to the power of integrity, intellectual rigour, and an unshakeable commitment to community development.
Born on August 7th, 1953, Chief Ochoga hails from Apa-Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State. His journey, rooted in a lineage of royalty and leadership in the Agila Kingdom, began in Otukpo. From an early age, he demonstrated an unusual passion for the law, drawing inspiration from Idoma legal pioneers such as Justice Paul Acheme Anyebe and Morgan Ogbole.
His quest for knowledge saw him attend Wesley High School, Otukpo, and Boys Secondary School, Gindiri for his Higher School Certificate (HSC), in present-day Plateau State. In a bold move that distinguished him from many of his peers who opted for Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, he chose the path of the “Great Ife,” enrolling at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1973. He later proceeded to the Nigerian Law School, Lagos, and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1977. This marked the beginning of a 49-year legal odyssey that would see him scale the highest pinnacles of his profession.
Chief Ochoga’s legal career is a masterclass in excellence and dedication. For nearly half a century, he has been a commanding presence in Nigeria’s legal landscape. His rise to becoming a Life Bencher stands as the crowning achievement of his professional life, a distinction he holds alongside other eminent Nigerians, including Chief Wole Olanipekun, SAN, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) etc. The Body of Benchers, established under Section 3 of the Legal Practitioners Act, comprises persons of the highest distinction responsible for the formal call to the Bar, discipline of erring lawyers and powers to make regulations towards upholding the core Values of the Legal Profession. To be numbered among them is to be recognized as a legal icon of unimpeachable standing.
His contributions extend beyond personal accolades. As the revered leader of the Otukpo branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), he has been instrumental in its revitalization and upliftment, earning the deep appreciation of colleagues and successive branch chairmen. He also served as a distinguished member of the Benue State Judicial Service Commission, further cementing his role in shaping the judiciary. On the national stage, he has handled numerous assignments with aplomb, including serving on the Presidential TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORMS (2003), and heading the 2021 Presidential Visitation Panel to the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti.Chief Ochoga’s foray into public service was marked by pioneering youthfulness. He became the youngest Commissioner in the history of Benue State, serving as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs under the young age of under 30.
His political career, spanning decades and parties, has been guided by unwavering principles: “Politics as Community Service,” “Let the System Work,” and “Integrity is First”. A former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) , he once served as the chairman of the APC Zone C Elders/Stakeholders Forum and recently resigned as Chairman of Elders Council of the Benue state Labour Party. He is often referred to as ‘Akpolofu K Idoma’ for his political sagacity.
His political philosophy champions competence and integrity above primordial sentiments like zoning. He consistently urges the Idoma elite to invest at home, emphasizing that private investment is critical to addressing youth unemployment and stimulating economic growth.
Beyond the courtroom and the corridors of power, Chief Ochoga’s deepest legacy is etched into the heart of the Idoma Nation. He is more than a political leader; he is a community developer and a cultural custodian.
He is a vocal champion for the creation of Apa State, a cause that resonates deeply with the Idoma people. He served as the Secretary of the historic first IDOMA Day committee (1988) that birthed the cherished red and black colours of the Idoma Nation.
He was an instrumental force behind vital infrastructure like the Otukpo-Utonkon-Igumale-Agila road and the establishment of Government Secondary School (GSS) Agila. His selflessness earned him the revered title of Patriarch of Apa-Agila.
Chief Ochoga is a community leader who has influenced and contributed immensely to the development of the Benue community. The title Akpa-olofu (meaning the Mighty Iroko tree), bestowed upon him by the Agila Traditional Council, is profoundly fitting. Like the Iroko, he stands unwavering, too strong to be felled by the storms of adversity or the winds of compromise.
As Chief John Agbaji Attah Ochoga celebrates his 73rd birthday, his life stands as a masterclass in integrity, tenacity, and an unshakeable commitment to justice and community development. The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, His Excellency, Sen. George Akume once fittingly described him as “a man of immense political courage, wisdom and commitment to his convictions and inclination to democracy, good governance, whose impact remains a significant and permanent signpost in the history and development of Benue State and beyond”.
He is a man who, despite his ethnic minority identity, became a mover and shaker in his own right. From being a commissioner at a very young age to reaching the apogee of his profession as a Life Bencher, he has remained a permanent star. His life is a powerful narrative of excellence and an unaided rise, inspiring countless generations of Idoma sons and daughters. On this auspicious day, the Idoma Nation, the Nigerian Bar, and a grateful nation honour a true icon, a man whose life is a testament to the enduring power of service, integrity, and an unwavering love for his people.
