Come August 27th, 2024, the late Mallam Magaji Dambatta will resurface in Kano memories. The maiden edition of an annual lecture series in his memories will hold that day.
Intervention recalls that the late Magaji Dambatta was among the eight young men and women who shook the old Northern Nigeria by forming its first political party – the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU). Of course, all on that list are dead by now and only Alhaji Tanko Yakasai comes closest to any of them in terms of how NEPU fought it out with the Northern People’s Congress (NPC)
According to the invite by the Centre for Democratic Studies of Bayero University, Prof Alkassum Abba from the Bala Usman Centre in Zaria will be delivering the lecture. Prof Alkasum has published several texts on the NEPU-PRP struggle of which Magaji Dambatta was a veteran along with Mallam Aminu Kano, Asabe Rezor, Sadu Zungur and several others. The late Magai Dambatta was the chief publicist of the party that party.
The lecture is titled “The significance of NEPU in Nigeria’s political history”
