Man or womankind’s near total defeat in the face of death was on display today at Veritas University, Abuja when the remains of Mrs Henrietta Gubo was brought to her office for the very last time before she was interned subsequently. Although Fr. Dr. Anthony Amadi who officiated the short prayer from the pocket ritual of the Church must have mitigated the sense of loss with words powerful in consolation, that did not conquer subdued sobbing, wet eyes and open wailing for the departed.
Mrs Gubo died on Monday, October 7th, 2019 during a surgery in a quasi public hospital in Abuja. She wedded shortly before Easter last April. The Assistant Librarian who had a Diploma, a Bachelor and Masters degree in Library Science from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria was contemplating undertaking a PhD in a different university from ABU, Zaria so as to dilute the inbreeding. That dream will no longer be fulfilled.
When called to speak, Mr Benjamin Alafiatayo, Veritas University Librarian and the late Henrietta’s boss, managed to say how cheerful and never complaining a staff the departed was.
Coming from the Northeast by father and Southeast by mother, her death has been a loss felt across cultural spaces.
