Nigeria based non-governmental organisation, Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, (CISLAC) is adding value to the non-state sector component of the on-going 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly, (UNGA). CISLAC is launching its Shadow Report on the Social Development Goals, (SDG-16 and Targets), an occasion providing opportunity for unpacking a call to action on Legislative Realization of SDG-16 and Target in addressing peace and justice in the 2030 Agenda, the document on consolidation of planetary scale sustainable development.
It would be recalled that while serving as Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, once called NGOs “the conscience of humanity”. It was the United Nations itself that coined the label Non-Governmental Organisations by which they became known till today although NGO status at the UN remains one of the most complicated issues to this day. Even as the UN is still a state dominated arena, what seemed a grudging concession in 1945 has become the norm as it would be unthinkable for any delegation to object to NGO participation in UN processes today sans voting.
CISLAC is inviting civil society activists, experts, the media and members of the public to the occasion scheduled for September 22nd, 2017 at 230 Park Avenue on 45 Street in New York. With the Shadow report on SDG-16 and Targets, CISLAC hopes to strengthen its commitment to addressing human rights, security and conflict management in regional communities and across nations. It forms a critical component of its larger brief as a legislature centered civil society advocacy platform engaging matters related to improved policy and legislative frameworks, transparency and accountability in governance for people oriented development. That positions it as a major voice on anti-corruption, the Sustainable Development Goals agenda, human rights, security and conflict management, climate change and gender inclusion. It has been extending its geographical coverage to other parts of Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
