Nearly everyone says university education in Nigeria is all about production and circulation of illiterates. The World Bank says so, the Nigerian Government is comfortable with that and most Nigerian newspapers have editorialised on the unemployability of graduates from the system. But very few people have anything to say on why the above scenario might be the case beyond heaping the blames on perpetual industrial strikes by academics who, in turn blame underfunding.
Well, one of the first generation universities is putting that on the table by focusing on “The challenges of Quality Higher Education in Africa”. The topic will be the defining item on the 60th anniversary of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The university has gotten Dr. Kole Shettima to speak to the topic. It is a topic that would not be strange to him, being the Africa Director of MacArthur Foundation and thus a stakeholder in the funding of the university system across the continent. A Zaria Emirate traditional title holder, Munir Ja’afaru, will chair the occasion.
The event scheduled for January 10th, 2024 on the Main Campus of the university will be streamlined on social media platforms, according to the invite to that effect.
