If any evidences were needed that the current wave of Covid-19 infections mean business, there are now plenty of such. Apart from the dramatic loss of General Olubunmi Irefin and Mr. Sam Nda-Isaiah, publisher of Leadership newspapers last week, it has claimed two more top members of the elite.
Prof Habu Galadima, political scientist and Director-General of the elite training ground in Nigeria – the Nigeria Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, (NIPSS) died Sunday at Gwagwalada Hospital in Abuja. Before him was Prof Chukwuma Osakwe of the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna.
While not much is known about Prof Osakwe, Prof Habu Galadima is known to have worked with Prof Jonah Isawa Elaigwu when the later was Director-General of the National Council for Inter-governmental Relations under the Babangida administration. He was a special Assistant to Prof Elaigwu, both of whom had been academics at the Department of Political Science, University of Jos.
Prof Galadima is generally rated to be a hardworking and brilliant researcher.
At the onset of the pandemic, the fear was that the virus would kill Africans in thousands. That did not happen at that moment but just as everyone is about to relax that there has probably been a concession to the long suffering Africans, the second wave came about in a no-nonsense poise.
Generally perplexed that Covid-19 appears to have reversed the earlier assumption of not killing Africans in thousands, people are converting social media sites to prescription spaces such as this below:
