Like most other platforms and movements in the 1980s, the student movement in Nigeria today is a shadow of itself. But it is coming from somewhere.
Maroonsquare, for whatever reasons, is keen about reminding the society where that originary point is and what that might have got to do with what is going on now in that realm.
To do that, it has assembled two veterans of the movement. One is a formidable ‘revolutionary waringa’ from ABU, Zaria of those years. She is Hauwa Mustapha of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abuja. The second is a made-in-Ife chip off the block academic by name Yomi Gidado. Gidado is an Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife don.
Memory as a methodological tool as well as a social subject has been a big debate in the social sciences. Taking that into consideration, there is bound to be a lot to take from the resource persons and to reflect upon in relation to what happened between 1982 and 1992 and what that may have to do with why Nigeria is a nation without the students component of the voices that matter today.
