“UK-Nigeria Relations and Global Affairs” is the topic that participants at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs, (NIIA) Ambassadorial Forum will be cracking their heads over in a matter of hours from the point of this posting. Invitation to scheduled Zoom meeting indicates start time of 3 pm, (local time).
Nigeria – Britain dialogue has not been such a common conversation recently and the Zoom conversation would, therefore, appeal to many with new insights on how the dynamics of British making of Nigeria actually worked out or otherwise and what context that plays in current relations between the two as well as each’s role in the world.
While post-Brexit Britain has been pushing the notion of ‘Global Britain’, there has been no such self-understanding in Nigerian foreign policy.
Meanwhile, Nigeria remains basically a replica of Britain, particularly in language, culture, judiciary and with a sizable number of Nigerian academics trained in Britain. Is it likely that the tradition of British universities conditioning admission to their programmes on English Language proficiency for Nigerians may be raised in the conversation? That is if the controversial spots in visa or, better still, ‘violent bordering’ practices by even liberal Britain doesn’t come up.
Every other country featuring on the Ambassadorial Forum surely has its uniqueness in Nigerian affairs. There is no doubt about that but, for historical reasons, none has or is about to overtake Britain in Nigeria even if the Abuja/Lagos – London air route is the only criterion used.
