The spaces of circulation of the cover graphic for this story has been amazing. Although it is mainly within social media platforms, it appears to strike a chord. It seems many are agreed that the decay in the university system warrants any turn at all, especially turn in the direction of religion.
If that were true, then this might signal a more rigorous version of such a turn, with a notable theologian and an established name in academia such as Ayo Banjo being involved as in this case. There must be very few who do not know him as a big name in literary studies, aside from being a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan.
Perhaps, this is all about necessity being the mother of invention as more and more persons turn to God, with religion becoming “the soul of a soulless world”, to quote the Marxists.
It would be interesting to see how a Christian lens can help university governance in contemporary Nigeria while waiting for the Muslim, Judaism and pagan lenses!
