The list of the dead from Covid-19 complications has grown by one more in Nigeria Sunday evening, January 3rd, 2021. He is Prof Oyewusi Ibidapo-Obe, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, (UNILAG).
The details are still sketchy but his death has already become public knowledge across the country.
Prof Ibidapo-Obe did not just serve as Vice-Chancellor, he is also an alumnus of one of the first generation universities in Nigeria, the UNILAG from where he obtained a First Class Degree in Mathematics. Born in 1949, he is now 71 years old.
He was the Pro-Chancellor of the First Technical University based in Ibadan at the time of his death. After serving as VC of UNILAG, he also moved on to be the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Ndufu in Ebonyi State, now renamed Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu.
The list at the elite level has been growing steady but not much is known at the level of frontline medical and para-medical workers and ordinary Nigerians. Not only do many ordinary Nigerians do not reckon much with Covid-19, believing wrongly that it is an elite affair, most have no access to functional healthcare facilities even at the best of times.
