The Lakurawa security threat in the Northwest of Nigeria is the subject of a December 29th, 2024 online symposium. It is being put together by the Centre for Peace Studies of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDU) Sokoto.
The graphic inviting participants to the symposium shows there is a speaker in each of English and French and a discussant in each of Fulfulde and Hausa. Dr. Abubakar Sokoto Mohammed of the university’s Department of Sociology will anchor the symposium.
The speakers an discussants are coming from diverse spaces of engagement with insecurity. While two are from each of the university’s Centre for Peace Studies and the Department of History, two others are from each of Secretariat of the Niger Basin Authority in Niamey in Niger Republic and the West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP).
Lakurawa seems to be the latest manifestation of insurgent youth groups against the system. They compound the insecurity crisis in the Northwest which has largely assumed banditry and kidnapping over the years. Somehow, the Nigerian State has not been able to crush these contending groups.
