For the crime of corruption and abuse of office, former president of France, Nicholas Sarkozy, will be turning around the famous phrase, “From Prison to Power”. Unlike Nelson Mandela, his is “From President to Prisoner”. A French court has sentenced him to jail for three long years which he would though not spend inside a classic jail house.
Even if he were, a French prison is most likely to be a more pleasant and functional one than the sort of concentration camps we have in most African countries but, for a former president of a member of the UN Security Council, this must be a certainty Sarkozy might never have contemplated. Apart from the ‘convict’ tag is also the corruption tag.
Did he see it coming? Most likely!. According to The Washington Post’s pullout (02/03/21), Barrack Obama had described Sarkozy in his memoir published last year as an incorrigible narcissist.
Life must, indeed, be such a complex thing. For the first time, he must be wishing he were an African where former presidents are rarely treated this way, including even those who proclaimed themselves life presidents and pocketed an entire country for as long as they were there.
But, in other parts of the world, this might not be the signal, especially if what The Washington Post writers are hinting at is anything to go by in relation to Donald Trump!
