International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria is up in arms against the non-confirmation of Hon. Justice Beatrice Lazarus Iliya as Chief Judge of Gombe after acting in that position for the statutory period of three months.
The gender warriors are protesting what it calls a planned swearing in of a junior male judge as Chief Judge in her place. FIDA said in a statement in Abuja by Rhoda Tyoden and Eliana Martins, National President and Publicity Officer respectively that doing so would amount to an act of gender discrimination.
It is, therefore, calling on Gombe State governor to do the right thing in compliance with the law “by swearing-in the most senior Judge who has been effectively acting”, arguing that doing so would be the proof that “His Excellency is not gender biased and upholds justice”
Declaring FIDA Nigeria as standing against all forms of discrimination and injustice, the signatories held up Hon. Justice Beatrice Lazarus Iliya to be a noble lady who is not due for retirement for another three years. They are also drawing attention to how painful it is for the non-confirmation to be taking place during the UN 16 day’s activism against Gender Based Violence and Human Rights Violations.
