A law has been announced permitting women to drive in Saudi Arabia. This is the first time it is happening. King Salman has officially announced this earlier today. But it won’t take off till mid next year when the processes pertaining to that would have been completed.
There have been protests in favour of reforming rigid restrictions on women driving in the kingdom and the relaxation is seen as an outcome of the protests. The royal decree made references to endorsement of the reform by state intellectuals who were reported to have said it was compliant with the Sharia.
