Bogged down at home by coping with banditry, kidnappers, terrorists, secession campaigners, high degree of corruption, overwhelmed leadership, elite fragmentation, election rigging, rising poverty and return of coups, majority of the Africans cannot afford to care what the hell is the hullabaloo about climate change.
But illustrating a piece by two staff of Carnegie Foundation for International Peace, one of them Nigeria’s Zainab Usman, is this Getty picture of Africans making a collective even if relatively feeble statement on climate change. The picture can be called a signifier of hope in the face of extreme hopelessness!
The struggle against the manifest as well as latent outcomes of climate change is the reality of the day. Mankind must, indeed, make peace with nature. The alternatives can be imponderable, especially for the Africans whose capacity for mitigation isn’t just there!
